Promises Kept Part One: Dylan The Cat

I recently promised that I would include more Robyn Hitchcock on this blog. Here he is comparing Bob Dylan to a cat:

How many times have you seen him play live? What were those shows like?

Five or six. Invariably disappointing – I missed his heyday – but he never does what you want him to anyway: he’s like a cat. My theory is that since 1966 he’s only inhabited himself occasionally on stage, to economize with the emotional gas, if you like.

The interview with Hitchcock is part of a wider feature American Songwriter is doing on Dylan. In it, I like this observation on Dylan that Jeffrey Lewis provides: “He’s a good artist to be inspired by but a bad artist to be influenced by.”
